Deeper Learning:

Beyond 21st Century Skills

The basic premise of this course is that we must intentionally and deliberately prepare all students for thinking critically while reinforcing essential collaborative problem solving skills that will engage and empower them in the present and better prepare them for a global future.  Deeper learning provides a road map for preparing students beyond 21st Century skills and is a term which encompasses all the knowledge, skills, and the myriad of ways of thinking students need to adopt in order to be prepared and eventually become successful navigating their present and future lives.

Deeper learning reinforces the idea that in addition to applying what students have learned, they must be able to understand how to integrate a skill set to successfully work collaboratively and overcome obstacles such as complex interpersonal and multi-cultural relations of today’s world. The intention in this exploration is to help educators understand, design, and document powerful learning experiences in a range of disciplines and settings utilizing the six areas of deeper learning including:

  1. Mastering Academic Content
  2. Thinking Critically and Solving Complex Problems
  3. Working Collaboratively
  4. Communicating Effectively
  5. Learning How to Learn
  6. Developing Academic Mindsets related to Resilience

Access, Equity, & Achievement For All Through InnovativePractice

Equity in education requires putting systems in place to ensure that every child and adolescent has an equal chance for success. That requires understanding the unique challenges and barriers faced by individual students or by populations of students and providing additional supports to help them overcome those barriers. (thinking map.com)

We will create a working environment to frame constructive conversations for exploring diversity, equity and inclusion in race, gender, socio-economic status and neurodiversity—through an engaged interactive reflective process.

We will explore:

  • how we currently meet the diverse and unique needs of our students
  • how we create inclusive environments that engage students to reach their full potential?
  • What the systemic barriers are that impede students from successfully accessing resources in our communities?
  • How innovative practice and spaces better engage and meet the needs of all students? Each participant will choose a focus that will best serve the population they are affiliated with and will complete an impact project that is immediately relevant to informing practice.

Engaging Minds: Essential Interventions to Reach Every Learner

The intention of this course is to explore and integrate the basic premise that each child and adolescent will achieve if provided with multiple points of access to learning, with a mastery level of methodology delivered by innovative educators. This course is based on the work of key learning experts focusing on achievement and brain-based differences. The primary focus of this exploration is the work of Kaufman, P. Dawson and G. McClosky whose research brain- based realities will be systematically utilized to create effective ways to reach all students. We will explore where in the brain attention is processed and which skills can be enhanced to increase achievement.

The course will also explore the development of discrete skill sets supporting executive functioning and positive brain-based changes that are essential to integrating deeper levels of focus and critical thinking. The observable and teachable characteristics that will be explored and cultivated throughout the course are; persistence, decreasing impulsivity, empathy, flexibility in thinking, meta-cognition, striving for accuracy and precision, questioning and problem posing, drawing on past knowledge, ingenuity and creativity, precision  of language and thought, gathering data through all senses, humor, curiosity, and cooperative thinking/ social intelligence. This course enables educators to facilitate the learning of students by acquiring and applying knowledge, skills, and abilities that address student needs and improvement goals of the district, school, and individual. The course conforms to best practices in research and relates to educators’ assignments and professional responsibilities[1].  The course content  is differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all participants.
